Places to see
Most of Tabora's sights are inside the town or a short ride out. Start with Livingstone's Tembe and the old Swahili quarter, then the German-era centre; with a full day, add Igombe Dam or Kazeh.

Livingstone's Tembe
The flat-roofed Arab trader's house at Kwihara where David Livingstone lived in 1871 and Henry Morton Stanley waited out a war.

The German Boma
The fort from which Germany ran central German East Africa, and the prize the Belgians took in 1916.

Tabora Hotel (the Kaiserhof)
Built in German times as a guesthouse fit for the Kaiser, and still a hotel today.

Tabora Railway Station
The 1912 station at the junction of the Central Line, where trains divide for Kigoma, Mwanza and Mpanda.

Gongoni Mosque and the old Swahili quarter
The Friday mosque at the centre of the oldest part of town, among the Arab houses, carved doors and mango trees the coastal traders left behind.

Tabora Boys School
The school that educated Julius Nyerere and most of Tanzania's first cabinet.

Tabora Zoo
A small zoo under old trees in Kitete, run by the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority: an easy afternoon out in town.
Igombe Dam
Tabora's reservoir, 12 km round, inside the Igombe Forest Reserve: birds, fishing and the town's main escape into nature.
Ugalla River National Park
A 3,865-square-kilometre park of river, floodplain and miombo woodland south-west of Tabora, with elephant, buffalo, leopard and giraffe.

Kazeh and Uyui
The site of the caravan town where Burton and Speke rested in 1857, in the Nyamwezi kingdom of Unyanyembe.
