Igombe Dam
Tabora's reservoir, 12 km round, inside the Igombe Forest Reserve: birds, fishing and the town's main escape into nature.
Igombe Dam was built in 1958 to supply Tabora with water and still does. The lake it created is about 12 kilometres around and lies inside the Igombe Forest Reserve, so the shore is miombo woodland rather than farmland, with water birds along the edges.
The Tanzania Forest Service, which manages the reserve, is developing it for visitors with boating, fishing, bird-watching and walking trails. It is the nearest piece of open nature to the town and a good half-day out by taxi.
